Trying Windows Live Writer

May 4th, 2007

Being quite bored at work, as I was waiting for feedback from a colleague, I decided to spend some time fooling around with some Microsoft tools. That’s how I stumbled upon Windows Live Writer.

It’s quite typical of Microsoft to approach a task like that of writing a blog post in the way that they did with Windows Live Writer, i.e. through a standard desktop application. One would say that it is weird or maybe just another example of the fact that Microsoft is still not getting it - a desktop app for writing blog content? However, I think this is brilliant. Yes, a desktop app, that standardizes the way that you write your blog posts, exposes a series of rich editing and formatting capabilities, and in the end of the day, makes posting a new entry as easy as saving a Word document.

Oh, and it works with almost every blogging service!

WGA Workaround for IE

January 17th, 2006

I recently tried to set up two new PCs running WinXP. After installing everything, it was time to go to the Windows Update site and start downloading the multitude of patches that have accumulated since SP2 was released. That meant that I had to bypass Windows Genuine Authentication, by implementing the workaround mentioned at Rafael Rivera’s article about the WGA workaround for Trixie.

Unfortunately the link to the script that implemented the workaround was dead. At the same time Trixie, which at some point came bundled with the script, no longer contained it… We can safely assume that Microsoft’s legal department had something to do with it.

Anyway, after some searching I managed to find a page that contained the actual code. Here’s a link to the WGA workaround instructions, as well as the script’s code:

// ==UserScript==
// @name WGA Workaround
// @namespace d09733c0-fe4c-11d9-8cd6-0800200c9a66
// @description Windows Genuine Advantage Workaround (IE)
// @include http*://*.microsoft.com/*
// ==/UserScript==

(function ()
{
// Fix Microsoft Downloads-based WGA
var js = document.createElement("script");
js.setAttribute("language", "JavaScript");
js.setAttribute("type", "text/javascript");
js.text = 'document.cookie="WinGenCookie=validation=0";';
document.getElementsByTagName('head').item(0).appendChild(js);

// Also fix Microsoft/Windows Update-based WGA
// (Thanks MacMonkey and rest)
window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all';
}
)();

Add Frontrow software to Mac Mini ASAP

October 13th, 2005

Today Apple announced an upgrade to its iMac line. Among other improvements, it introduced a feature called Frontrow, which is actually a UI allowing a user to access his muic and videos, control iTunes and iDVD, etc. by using a simple IR remote control. This is Apple’s answer to Microsoft’s Media Center PC, and the first impression has been really possitive.

However, this feature is available only on iMacs, whereas, to my opinion, it would really useful if added to the Mac Mini. Imagine being able to connect your Mac Mini to your big-screen TV, and use it as the center of your digital media!

ning.com

October 5th, 2005

Just a quick note on something that I will be following quite closely.

As of yesterday, ning.com has gone live. So, what is ning.com? Hehe, I’ll let you discover it on your own.

At the moment I’m busy studying the documentation on how to create my first application there… something that I was thinking about for quite a while. So, more on this soon!

Music downloads pricing: A case of greedyness or one of common business sence?

October 2nd, 2005

Quoting from a /. article:

First the music industry wanted more money, by changing Apple’s 99 cents per song policy. Now one exec is threatening to pull the plug on Apple if Steve Jobs doesn’t change the iTunes Music Store pricing.” From the article: “Nash’s comments echoes those made last week by Warner CEO Edgar Bronfman, who called for Apple to adopt variable pricing and share out revenues from iPod sales.

This thing has been on the news for quite a while. It seems that the music companies, aware of the enormous iPod and iTunes success, want a bigger cut of the pie from Apple. This is primarily due to two reasons: the 99cent/song flat charge doesn’t make sence business-wise, and the emergence of new, lucrative markets, such as the mobile phone ringtone and music downloads, which have not yet been addressed by Apple.

Regarding the first point: the music industry things that the flat charge model that the iTunes is using is flawed. The music companies believe that there is little sence in charging the songs of the latest Franz Ferdinand album as much as those of some god forsaken country band of the 80s. They advocate the introduction of multi-level pricing, that will be aware of the fact that certain songs are “hotter” than other, older, ones. After all, this is a free market, where prices are supposed to be set according to demand. I guess that what’s in their minds is a pricing scheme with feedback, that will lead to price raises should the demand be high enough, and to price drops for older items, as a way to help create demand.

At the same time, the industry is a spectator to a ridiculous phenomenon, that of the ringtone download business, where the mobile carriers charge as much as $2-3 per ringtone! If one realizes that this ringtone is nothing more than a simple MIDI file, it is easy to understand how outraged the music industry must be at the fact that people can download a high quality music file from the iTunes store just for 99 cents.

Under these circumstances, I think that it would be hard for anyone to blame the music companies for wanting to re-negotiate the terms of making business with Apple. Unfortunately, their reaction to the aforementioned challenges is as flawed as the model that they are trying to redefine.

It seems that the legitimate music download business is finally a viable alternative to illegal music downloads, and this is mostly due to Apple’s combination of the iPod with the iTunes Music Store. When the store started back in 2002, it introduced the first attempt to sell digital music online without treating the customers as potential thieves. The licencing scheme was reasonable, and it accounted for the fact that people have more than one computers on which they want to listen to host their music libraries (containing the songs that they’ve bought online). And, at the time, the pricing was great. 3 years ago, a new album would cost more that EUR20 in Europe, and buying the whole album online, actually made sense financially. All these facts resulted to the huge success of the iTunes Store. In other words, Apple created a market that up until that time seemed to be irrelevant, and prepared the ground for the introduction of other such services.

Unfortunately, the business model that was introduced back then, doesn’t seem to be viable any more. I do believe that using a flat charge for any song is irrational, especially for songs that have long been forgotten by everyone. At the same time, it is ridiculous that the music industry is even comparing the music download business with the ringtone one. Most people would never buy more than 10-20 ringtones, whereas music fans buy a couple of albums every week. Who makes more money for the business? The occasional ringtone downloader, or the loyal music fun?

Four years ago, Apple created a new market for music downloading. It is now high time that it should revisit the business model under which the iTunes Store operates. This process should take into account the requirements imposed by the music industry. However, both parties should exercise caution in introducing changes, so that any new pricing scheme does not strangle the market…

iBush - Beggarware

March 16th, 2005

I came across iBush while browsing through the Macintosh Software section in the Demonoid.com torrent directory.

iBush is “an artificially unintelligent Oval Office Occupant simulator”. The current version (v2.4) ofers unique capabilities, such as the ability to talk nonsense about the most interesting issues, such as “Weapons of Mass Destruction”, “Waging war against Iraq”, “America’s Israeli Friends” and “America’s Arab Friends”. The recent release of the code has been updated in order to say the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about what happened in Ohio.

This is also the first piece of software that I’ve come across that is distributed through a beggarware license, that is, you are required to buy a homeless person a EUR5.00 meal if you decide to use it :)

iBush is currently only available on Mac OSX, but for those who have still to discover the truth, a CGI version is available somewhere :)

Dimitris passed me an anthology of the PVP Online comic strips. Reading them is a must :)

Workaholic

March 9th, 2005

OK, the time is 22:30, I’m still at the office, and it doesn’t seem that I’m leaving any time soon.

I’ve regressed back into spending my days on conference calls, meetings, management tasks and, on top of all this I’m also developing. I’m not putting any effort at all on my PhD, I’m faking interest on research and I’m just so close to breaking under all this pressure.

(I’m not sure whether you’ll find this post here later. I’ll probably just take some time to rest, and then delete this)

Anyway, just as a mental note:

I’ve started using two very interesting and useful tools that I should write about soon: BugTracker .NET and FlexWiki. Their installation was more or less straightforward, and their utility is just impressive. However, they are based solely on a Windows environment (ASP .Net, MS SQL Server, etc). Anyway, more on those two apps later.

πούχε τον Gates πατέρα;
Aς βάζαν Linux σταθερό

March 2nd, 2005

(Aναδημοσιεύεται από το αντίστοιχο post μου στο www.eurovisionmania.gr)

Λέω, πάει, στο φτύσιμο με έχουν. Kάτι μου λέει του στυλ, περίμενε να έρθει και θα είσαι έτοιμος. Ποιος να έρθει; Aπό πού; Kαι να σου που χτυπάει το τηλέφωνο, και φτύνει το fax το αποτέλεσμα της αίτησής μου. Kάγκελο εγώ! Ποιος, πού, τι έγινε τώρα;

Fax…

Konfabulator

July 4th, 2004

OK, I know I’ve been silent for quite some time, but these were two really busy weeks. Now I’m back, and I’ve found a new tool for my Mac.

It’s called Konfabulator, it’s really like the new Dashboard that will be included in Mac OS X “Tiger”, and it has an amazing collection of plug-ins (they call them widgets, downloadable from www.widgetgallery.com) that people can install and run on their desktop.

Beyond the basic tools providing useful info, such as the weather forecast, CPU utilization, etc., one can find widgets like a Mac port of Minesweeper, the current Department of Homeland Security threat level, or the must-have office app KoverMe! that can be used to take a screenshot of your desktop while you are busy and use a hot-keuy to cover up your desktop with this screenshot at times when you need to pretend being busy :D.

I strongly recomend this app, which I’ve already installed. Thanks to Dimitris Giakoumis for scanning through the WidgetGallery identifying these great widgets!

It’s Here!

June 23rd, 2004

Hehe, my new PowerBook is here and it’s working! I’ve been fooling around with it for the last two hours, and I’m amazed with it!

I’m trying to get into the philosophy of MacOS, i.e. forget that I should think about what my computer might want me to do (Windows), but what *I* want my computer to do for me! In the meantime, I’m downloading a series of apps and utilities, reading the manuals and trying not to break anything :D

More on the results tomorrow!

Migration: Mail and Personal Info - Part 1

June 18th, 2004

OK, it might be a few days before I actually get to touch my Mac :D but I think it is prudent to start preparing for the migration.

What’s the most important task in this process? By far, the migration of my mail and all the additional information (tasks, contacts, appointments and notes) residing in Outlook 2003, the PIM tool that I use in Windows. I intend to use MS Entourage 2004 on my Mac to handle my mail, and I was expecting (foolishly it seems) that the transition would be just a matter of importing my Windows Outlook .pst file into Mac:Entourage.

After some initial search, I came to the following conclusions:

  • very few people are using Mac:Entourage 2004 yet, or at least not that many as to have come up with the same problem
  • migrating from Outook tou Entourage X (the previous version of Entourage) required a quite laborious process of migrating from Outlook to Mozilla (in Windows) or Eudora, transfering the files to Mac, changing certain file extensions and then hoping that this would be read by Entourage. Oh, btw, some attachments and non-mail information will not be migrated…

Then, through some additional search, I came up to an article on converting mail boxes on FrogNet. This directed me to this wonderful site, ScriptBuilders, full of AppleScript apps that automate almost everything. Among them I located Import-Export Entourage X 1.3.1, which seems to be able to transfer information between Outlook, Entourage, Excel, Palm Desktop and other Windows and Macintosh PIMs.

OK, now I feel a bit more relaxed. I have to check this out though, so I’ll update you on Tuesday!

Hello World

June 16th, 2004

Hi there! How are you?

Just logged on to say hi to you all! OK, this is my second attempt to start a blog. My previous blog, hosted by a good friend of mine and notorious blogger, Diego Doval, ended up with no more than a few posts. You see, I can easily get tired of things, unless there is something that can keep my enthusiasm (usually quite difficult).

However, it seems that I’ve found something that will probably keep me going for a while! I’ve just ordered a new Mac! It’s a new PowerBook G4, 1.33GHz, 12.1″ display, etc. (find more info here).

I’ll explain the reasons why I decided to buy a Mac in a new post, but for the moment I would like to state the purpose of this blog. My “Mision Statement” :D

I intend to use this blog in order to record my experiences in migrating from Windows to the Macintosh. I expect this to be less daunting than it might seem to be, and I hope that this blog will help convince other people to do the same.

Well, my Mac will be here on Tuesday, so until then there would be plenty of time to talk about why I’m going through this and what I expect to get out of it!

So, TTYL!
